Smallmouth tend to congregate both offshore and near steep drops onshore (particularly where shade and tall vegetation is abundant). "Jigs catch pigs" rings very true on this lake, especially green-pumpkin.
I prefer a lighter jig this time of the year here as vegetation is sparse and not heavy. 3/8 oz - 1/2 oz stealth feider does the trick. Trimmed skirt and heavy-flutter trailer (trimmed down rage craw - green pumpkin) can be the ticket.
Sunny, still days in the fall tend to yield the best results.
