Storms moved through in the early morning. Visibility was less than 1'. Air temps in the 90° s with a light breeze. I started the day catching a few 2lbers on a Spook. I then moved off shore with a 10' crank and picked up a few more fish. I was able to find a school and was catching 2-3lbers just about every cast with a drop shot. My biggest with the DS was right at 4lbs. I did manage to find a 5lber flipping a Bronco Bug. It was a great 4th on the water!!

I was running the Flapping Frog off the bank in less than 7 feet of water. A mix of lily pads and some algae when I paused it in an open spot. Bloop…just a subtle slurp and down she went! I set the hook and reeled her in! This frog is so versatile that you can just let it sit and twitch it like a standard hollow bodied frog. Then run it as intended and let the legs kick away and it will get strikes that way too! Black, Bone, White, and ones with a yellow or orange belly work great. I added my set up, but the rod isn’t available anymore. It’s an Abu Garcia Jordan Lee spinning rod I converted to a frog rod.

This was stop #3 for the IKFC. I started my day trying to find an offshore bite. I caught 4 bass from 8"-10 on back to back casts with a crankbait. I knew that wouldn't cut it so I went shallow with a buzzbait. I caught a handful of of dinks burning the bank. 2 were good enough to put on the measuring board. Then I slowed down picking apart the banks with a 1/2oz skipping skipping jig. This produced great numbers but no quality. The pondweed is dying off and the cooler dirty water have the fish in a weird transition.

We have had a lot of rain before the weekend. This dropped the water temps. The curly pondweed has died off and washed out of most of the lake. This made the rock piles easily fishable. I started the day catching them shallow with a frog and then pushed out to the rocks with a drop shot. Nothing huge but but a good number of 1.5-2.5lbers made for a fun day.

Falling water temps and lower water levels made it difficult to find quality fish, but I managed a few early. I also caught 5 or 6 drum. One of the keys was adding a Picasso underspin harness to add a little flash in the dirty water. This was my first time at Coralville, so I was just happy to catch a few fish.

Went out for walleye and crappie, ended up finding massive schools of bait and bass corralling them. Fish weren’t biting topwater but anything flashy and subsurface was hit. Crankbait, spinner bait, and both hard and soft jerkbaits got hit. When you find schools of bait pitch structure in its path as the bass wait in ambush. Got 3 of a tree that was 10 ft from a main point on a crank fluke and spinnerbait. When the fish school larger and louder is key!

I took my first win in a kayak fishing tournament! This was stop #5 for the Iowa Kayak Fishing Club and my 4th tournament of the year. I started the day throwing a buzzbait. I caught 1 that ended in my final 5 fish limit on the buzzbait. After a few hours I moved out and flipped a Bronco Bug on some of the flooded timber. This got me a few extra bites. As the sun got high I moved out to some rock piles. I found a school on side scan and was able to target them with a jig. This produced the bigger fish including a 21" that put me into first and would take home big bass for the tournament. The key was to slow drag it and make contact with the bottom. When that bite died down I would drag the same Bronco Bug to generate some additional bites. It was a fantastic day on the water!!

Went out after a thunderstorm and fished a submerged rock pile. Just made a decent cast over it and reeled it back over the rock pile. Nothing big just caught numbers.
