Summary

What you need to know about fishing Indian Lake

Indian Lake is a 5,800-acre reservoir in Northwest Ohio that is primarily fed by the Great Miami River but also receives inflows from Cherokee Mans Run, Blackhawk Creek, and Van Horn Creek. The most popular species for anglers on Indian Lake is the saugeye which is a hybrid between a walleye and a sauger (note: for purposes of species sorting we treat sauger, walleye, and saugeye the same). Anglers also target panfish, catfish, crappie, and large and smallmouth bass. The saugeye species thrives in the cool, shallow, murky waters of Indian Lake and spend most of their time close to the bottom as a result of their sensitivity to light, a trait they share with their walleye and sauger relatives. They make their way to shallow areas of the lake near shore or one of the many islands on the lake in low-light, early morning and evening to feed during the spring and fall. They can also be found in the deeper pools of Indian Lake during the day and throughout the warm summer months. Common techniques for catching saugeye include vertical jigging with a round-head jig and paddle tail or other flashy soft plastic and trolling with a crankbait just off the bottom. We recommend letting your braid out until you feel your bait tap the bottom and then reel up a crank or two to make sure you’re as close to the bottom as possible. Indian Lake State Park offers plenty of amenities for enjoying this excellent fishery.
