Fort Peck Lake (also called Lake Fort Peck) is the largest reservoir in Montana expanding to 245,000 acres and has a length of 134 miles along the Missouri River. Construction was finished on the Fort Peck Dam in 1940 and the reservoir reached full capacity in 1947. Other than a couple small towns located near, for the most part the lake it located in the middle of nowhere. It’s common to make a several days trip and stay at one the campgrounds around the perimeter of the lake. Fort Peck has over 50 different species of fish located in its waters. Some of the more sought after fish include, walleye, northern pike, paddlefish, sauger, lake trout, smallmouth bass, and chinook salmon. Fort Peck is also the location for the well-known Governor’s Cup Walleye Tournament that it is held in the summer and draws boats from all over the state. Spring is the perfect time to go after those trophy lake trout. Anglers in the summer and fall primarily focus on walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike. With its vast number of coulees, bluffs and cuts, targeting shallower wind-blown points and pockets can prove successful in locating many different species of fish. In early summer, pike like to move into weed beds and into the back of bays while smallmouth and walleye can be found on rocky points. Common lure choices include spoons, spinners, crankbaits, minnow plugs, and a jig/grub combo.
