Last Tuesday, Bob and I headed to Truman Lake for the Tuesday Night Hog Fight, but before the tournament started we spent the afternoon trying to dial in a pattern. We found fish relating to main lake and secondary points that had a mix of brush, rock, or other cover. The Magnum shaky head paired with a new Motion Fishing straight worm we’ve been designing was absolutely getting the job done, and we mixed in a football jig for a few extra bites as well. We caught a lot of fish during practice, including a solid 5-pounder, and felt like we had a really good game plan heading into takeoff. When the tournament started at 5:30, it became obvious things had changed. We went nearly an hour without a bite, and the fish we had found earlier just weren’t setting up the same way. Instead of forcing the pattern, we made an adjustment and started fishing a little shallower on those same points. It didn’t take long before we started getting bites again on that Magnum shaky head and straight worm. The fish hadn’t left the area—they had simply repositioned. We ended up bringing three fish to the scales for 8.41 pounds, which was good enough to cash the last check in the derby. If you’re heading to Truman Lake, they’ve shut the current off and the fish are definitely in a transition period. The deep bite has slowed down, but the true shallow late-summer pattern hasn’t fully developed either. Right now, the fish seem to be somewhere in between, so don’t get locked into one depth. Pay attention to what the lake is telling you, make adjustments when you need to, and once you find a pattern, stick with it. I think it won’t be long before the late-summer topwater and squarebill bite really starts heating up, but for now, the Magnum shaky head with a straight worm and a football jig were our best producers. Greg and I fished our club tournament Sunday morning out of Fairfield Boat Ramp on Truman Lake, and it turned into one of those summer mornings you hope for. The weather was beautiful, and the fishing got hot right from the start. We kicked things off on a point where we’d had some success earlier in the week, and the fish were still there. We quickly put two keeper bass in the boat, both around the 2½-pound mark, which gave us a lot of confidence. A few stops later, Greg connected with a 5-pounder on a big worm, and from that point on we knew we had a chance to put together a special day. By weigh-in, we had 16.56 pounds to earn the win, and we caught close to 20 keeper bass throughout the day. Most of our fish were solid 2½-pound-class bass, making for a fun day with plenty of action. The offshore bite is definitely where it’s happening right now. We caught the majority of our fish in 5–12 feet of water around offshore structure, focusing on brush piles, stumps, and rocky points. Our best producers were big worms and football jigs, and those two baits consistently generated bites all day. I’ve included the full list of the baits we used in this report. I made it over to Truman Lake Tuesday evening for a little three-fish tournament, but before takeoff my buddy Greg and I spent a couple of hours getting his new LiveScope set up and doing a little scouting. Right away it was obvious the fishing had gotten tougher. The lake had been pulling a lot of current, but once that current slowed down the fish really seemed to scatter. During practice we got one good bite out of a brush pile, so that gave us enough confidence to spend a good portion of the tournament fishing brush along with a few main-lake points. When we blasted off at 5:00, I had a heartbreaking start. I lost what I believe was about a 4-pounder almost immediately, and in a three-fish tournament that’s a fish you can’t afford to lose. We kept our heads down and covered a lot of water, eventually catching six keeper bass throughout the evening. Our biggest fish weighed around 3½ pounds, and almost all of our bites came on either a football jig or a big worm. By the end of the night we managed 8.40 pounds, which was enough to grab the last check. Looking back, that lost fish definitely would’ve made a big difference, but that’s tournament fishing. Sometimes you’re one bite away from a great finish. If you’re heading to Truman, don’t expect to find schools of fish loaded up in one area right now. We caught fish off both points and brush piles, but they were really spread out. Keep moving, fish plenty of spots, and be ready to grind for every bite until the current starts positioning them better.
