Fished a club tournament on Lake Anna during the pouring rain and wind. The weather started poorly, improved slightly around noon, and worsened an hour before weigh-in with a line of severe thunderstorms. I actually got off the water as the storms approached, leaving more than an hour of fishing time on the lake. But, I have had too many close encounters with lightening, and I no longer take chances with it. I caught bass through out the day, but I lost four good fish that would have really helped my weight. Unfortunately, I tried to horse them in, as my 82-year old co-angler had trouble with the net. I would up with a small limit of largemouth, most of whom I caught off of stumps or submerged grassbeds. But, it was still a great day on the water!

Practiced for a tournament to be held on April 26 and found a few spawning bass on stumps in main lake pockets. I caught several nice bass, like the 4lber pictured, on a variety of soft plastics, including a weightless Yum Dinger and a lightly weighted Strike King Rage Bug. I also caught a few on Neko-rigged Zoom Trick Worm. The accuracy of casts was critical, as most bass did not want to leave the stumps to chase lures away.

Stained water was key to getting these spooky fish to bite. Find the grass and find the bass.

Fished a club tournament on Lake Anna and found largemouth in different stages of the spawn. Those most willing to bite were post-spawn fish looking to regain some weight. With heavy clouds and drizzle, bass willingly hit topwaters (Megabass PopMax) early, but as that bite died, I had a lot of success on shakey heads with a variety of Zoom and Jackall soft plastics attached. Largemouth bit Trick Worms (black), finesse worms (red bug), Fish Doctors (green pumpkin), and Jackall Flick Shake worms (green pumpkin). Most bass were hanging loosely to docks, but I found a few roaming stump flats and rocky points in Sturgeons and Dukes Creeks.
