Summary

What you need to know about fishing Lake Barkley (KY)

Lake Barkley is a 58,000 acre, man made, lake by the impoundment of the Cumberland River. Measuring over 134 miles, Lake Barkley has plenty of water to fish. Popular species to target include Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, White Bass, and even Sauger. Similar to Kentucky Lake, Barkley is known for big fish. Both Crappie and Largemouth Bass can be caught in record size. Additionally, Barkley is also a great ledge fishery. Fishing large schools of bass that use the ledge as a feeding highway can be targeted with deep diving crankbaits, spoons, football jigs, and carolina rigs. The ledge fishing is usually at peak in the summer months. During the spring months, while bass and crappie are in spawning season, many anglers target shoreline structure like docks and sunken timber. Crappie are often located by fishing brush piles and other offshore structure during the summer months as the water warms up. Common baits for this style of fishing include live minnows and worms.
