Summary

What you need to know about fishing Lake Oahe

While being the northernmost part of the Missouri River, Lake Oahe is a deep, and clear body of water. This makes this lake a great fishing and boating lake. The most common species targeted include Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Crappie, and White Bass. Walleye is the most common of all the fish targeted with many tournaments being held each year. Successful tactics tend to be dragging a live minnow or trolling crankbaits along wind blown shorelines. Once a school of fish is located, slowing down and vertically jigging and casting jigs can be used to pick apart the school and maximize the number of fish caught. Recently, Smallmouth Bass have been gaining popularity and Lake Oahe was home to the Bassmaster Elite Series in the summer of 2018. These smallmouth are caught using a dropshot or small swimbait fished around isolated boulders that schools of fish would congregate on.
