Summary

What you need to know about fishing Lake Whitney

Lake Whitney is a 23,000-acre reservoir between Fort Worth and Waco Texas. The Reservoir was created as a flood control measure with the Whitney dam on the Brazos River south of where it’s met with inflows from the Nolan River. Largemouth, smallmouth bass, catfish, striped bass, and white bass are popular targets for anglers on Lake Whitney. Black bass fishing is some of the best in the state and optimal conditions exist for growing large stripers. White bass fishing is extremely hot in the spring months of late February, March, and April and can be found in shallow water near structure. In March with the warming water temperatures, white bass (sometimes called “sand bass”) begin their spawning runs up rivers and tributaries that feed the lakes. They can be targeted with erratic blade and spoons or panfish jigs and soft plastics. They can also be caught slow trolling small crankbaits. The clarity on Lake Whitney is generally low with stained water and algal blooms do occur which can be toxic to fish populations. The lake has great public access points for boat fishing and fishing from the bank.
