What you need to know about fishing Lay Lake

Lay Lake is a 12,000-acre reservoir located 35 minutes south of Birmingham off of I-65. Created in 1914 for hydroelectric generation, the lake has become a popular destination for many types of anglers. With seven public access areas, there is no shortage of places to get on the water. This lake is known to have numbers of largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, hybrid bass, striped bass, catfish, and panfish. With a wide variety of fish species, this lake draws the most attention for the largemouth and spotted bass. Many high-profile bass tournaments are held here including the 2002 Bassmaster Classic, which was won under the Logan Martin Dam at the very northern part of the lake. Largemouth bass tend to be in creeks and backwater sloughs while spotted bass are often caught near deeper ravine areas on the main lake. Common lures for largemouth are crankbaits and jigs around hard structure, and Texas rigged plastic worms around vegetation. Big spots can be caught with an Alabama rig or ball head jig. If anglers are looking for crappie, focus on wood structure with a jigging minnow or small spinnerbait. Max Depth: 88 ft, Average Depth: 22 ft
