Took the boat out to Leech Lake this morning. It felt a lot like the beginning of fall today. When I got on the water air temps were pleasantly cool this morning. It was a pretty calm morning with a slight breeze on the lake. I wanted to hit the reeds first thing which is my bread and butter, and it paid off bigtime. I was throwing a dirty jigs swim jig with a Zman trailer up into the reeds as far as I felt like I could land a fish. Depending on reed density that was anywhere from a foot into the reeds to 30 feet into the reeds at some areas. I didn't catch a ton of fish, but I landed around 15 fish total and 5 of them were over 18 inches the biggest was just shy of 20". All of the fish were over 15' which was nice to see a good size structure on the lake. The big fish were definitely up shallow putting on the feed bag this morning. I had multiple times where my bait would hit the water, fish would bite I would miss the first hook set then the fish would continue to strike the bait and chase it down. I also had multiple fish competing for the bait when I had a fish on the line coming into the boat. All of the fish I was able to land had very fat bellies. Seemed to me like the fish were starting to get ready for the colder months ahead and are definitely in the mood to eat!

The emergent reed beds were absolutely loaded, when working the narrows. Nearly every cast got bit. Care needs to be taken with the skin hook to ensure maximum weedlessnes. The outside edges hold a few, but most of my bites were deep in the reed beds. So cast deep in and shake. Work slowly and carefully back to the boat. Enjoy the fight, pulling the fish out of the weeds. This is why we use up-weighted braid and leader.
