I had a bass club tournament on the Chain yesterday. I was the only Co-angler in the club to get a limit. Maybe the thunderstorms from last night had the fish off. My boater quickly discovered the bass in Bertha/Clamshell had a thing for a blue Chatterbait catching a fish on his first cast after we arrived in Bertha around 11:30. He culled 4 or 5 times before I finally took him up on the offer to take the trolling motor. I put my first keeper in the boat shortly after going up front. It took me about an hour and a half to get my limit at which point I gave him control again. I was getting most of the bites on the inside weedline of wind swept banks. I got 3 or 4 pike to every bass. My boater was retrieving quite a bit slower than me and was catching more fish because of it.

The big smallmouth are starting to stack up on deeper rock piles. It seemed like the casting location was key as bites were few and far between unless you could make repetitive casts to specific spots. The bites were subtle the fish would grab it and not move. This bite should hold up if the weather stays decent.

Smallies are cruising the shallows preparing to spawn. Fish are still grouped up and hungry but should be making beds or on beds by the weekend. Cruising sand weed edges and tossing a jerkbait was key. Keep an eye out for dark spots swimming in the sand and chuck a hair jig their way. As the spawn progresses, please try to leave the fish who are on beds alone, this chain has been decimated over the last few years of tournament fishing. Protect these fish.
