First trip up to Mille Lacs this year. Conditions were not ideal for what I was looking to do. Had overcast sky's with some showers sprinkled in. Main lake was at 57 degrees, was never able to pin anything down out there. A few scattered fish on a jerkbait was it. Headed back into the bays in the search for some warmer water and once I found it I found the fish. Back bays were 62-63 degrees. I was up super shallow, 2-3 feet of water burning a chatterbait through the reeds and they hit it hard. I could see beds on my mega 360 and visually if I was close enough. All my fish came from focusing around those beds.

Focused on shallow rock reefs that had bigger boulders on one of the edges with sand on the break. Worked jerkbaits and swimbaits in those areas. Also found shallow sand flats with scattered rock and threw hair jigs in those areas and caught some fish.

I spent the day targeting pre-spawn smallmouth on isolated rock piles and boulders with a Outkast Feider Fly. Having the right rod is key to being able to make long casts with the hair jig--the 7'6" MLM Daiwa Tatula Elite rod is perfect for that application. Fish were staging in 8-12 fow, just waiting for the water temperature to get right before moving up to spawn. The areas that we found the most success had large pods of perch schooled up.

My dad and I got out on the water and found schools of fish staging on isolated rock piles and boulders in about 10 fow. These fish were in their pre-spawn stage, getting ready to push up shallow to spawn and were keying in on large schools of perch. My dad broke his PB with a 5 lb 14 oz giant within the first thirty minutes of daylight on the water.

North side sand produced well. Follow the 13-15' contour line in along the sand break line. The key was getting the bait away from the boat. Long flourocarbon leaders - 8-10', and small VMC #6 hooks. Let out 50' or more of line. The fish were scattered.
