Started fishing around the upper end of the falls between Newton and Pipestone. All the smallies were hanging out in the slower/deeper water behind the pockets of rock waiting for baitfish/craws to come by. Working a squarebill was great for the majority of the fish as it would get hung up less or come free with the moving water. For cleanup duty, the Zman mini max with either a Hog Farmer Spunk Shad or a Big Bite Baits Kamikaze Swimon was the ticket for getting the smallies to eat (the jackhammer's bigger hook makes it difficult). Bite around the moving water seemed to be better in the early afternoon. Early AM and late PM, the bite shifted to grass-lines and shade-lines along the bank. All fish released, as usual!

Northern Pike
TechniqueHard Topwater (Popping)SeasonFallStructureSubmerged VegetationTook the canoe across Fall Lake from Entry #24 to the BWCA and portaged to Newton Lake. Pike were very aggressive all over Newton lake. However, the better fish came in areas with a shadeline at the deep point of any submerged greenery. Topwater snagged the most pike (and was the most fun). However, having the bladed treble on the popper seemed to be the ticket to attract the occasional smallie. Plopper worked great in the early AM / late PM around our campsite and even caught some on a frog. They would also smash a Zman Mini Max worked along weedlines and around isolated rock piles. Fairly small pike for the most part, so 15lb fluoro worked great, but made sure to re-tie often. The Okuma Hakai worked great and cast everything from a plopper to a small popper without issue.
