TechniqueCarolina RigsSeasonSummerStructureBouldersEarly summer/late post spawn pattern on the first week in July. Sunny and calm day with water about 71. The key was to find some different looking rock structure in that 10-15ft depth. Everybody's favorite ball and chain C-Rig produced the best. The fish were spitting up perch on the way to the boat though and could be caught with jerkbaits, I just couldnt get them as consistently as I could being on bottom.

TechniqueFootball JigsSeasonSummerStructureRock PileFished grass with rockpiles scattered in it. Threw the chatterbait to cover water then picked up the jig to fish the rockpiles. Chatterbait bite was better in the morning and in the wind but if it slicked off the jig was the better choice

TechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationI finished up the BASS Open with another top 10 on my favorite tournament lake! The keys this week were using my Lowrance Active Target to find fish relating to scattered submerged vegetation in 10-14' and pitching a Z-Man Trick Shotz in Goby Bryant to them on a 1/4oz Angler Tungsten weight. I then would take a Bill Lewis MR12 and reel that as fast as I could to generate reaction strikes from the same fish when they turned to a negative mood in the afternoons. The fish were heavily keying in on perch fry during this time of year. I was only getting 7-10 bites a day but averaged about 17.25lbs each day.

TechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSummerStructureLedgesI launched from South Shore State Boat Launch mid afternoon in late July. Water temperatures were in the high 70s. I began fishing weed lines in 10-12' of water looking for active walleye in patches of cabbage with locally made casting crawler harnesses. After finding only freshwater drum and pickerel in the weeds, I moved to deeper transitions from weed to rock in roughly 15' with the Megabass Dark Sleeper and the Zman TRD CrawZ. Some smallies were around, but action was spotty. I moved to Lakeport Shoal as the evening began. My electronics lit up as I approach showing lots of solid arcs, and I found feeding walleye and highly active smallies stacked on the ledges around the shoal in 15-21'. The Maxscent Flat Worm on a drop shot worked for all species here, with walleye hitting while drifting and smallies more attracted to a slight shakes and a slow retrieve while spot locked on the deeper end of the ledges. I even had some perch come to the party, with schools following the flatworm all the way to the boat.
