TechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonFallStructureDamFish a soft jerkbait rigged on a spinning rod in the strong current. Mix up your colors often to trigger more bites. White, bone, and chartreuse colors are productive. Swim baits casted and retrieved slowly can also trigger bites from smallmouth and largemouth if a drum doesn’t pick it off first. Patience is key.

The bite was super tough on Pickwick but was able to get a key bite close to the dam in slack water on a Sexy Dog. Success with spark shad on smallies along bluff walls near main channel drop offs and in current. Largies were cruising in and out of grass near ledges and flushing shad. Success with flukes or anything weedless you can quick toss up against vegetation walls that are trapping shad around points.

All three species of smallmouth, spotted, and largemouth bass are eating shad as they migrate into shallow waters. Laydowns in current offer great structure for big largemouth. Riprap banks are a great current break for spots and smallmouth to ambush baitfish.

Flipping wood and grass mats got some good bites. Walking frog and buzz bait around stumps, brush, bluff walls in the back creeks, and submerged shallow structure produced several 2 pounders. square bill crank got bit on rip rap. Cold front this week should push even more big fish up into the wood and onto the rocks.
