Northern PikeTechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationI am the Bass Pundit and would prefer this report to be about bass, but Platte Lake had a very severe winter kill this year. Not sure if any resident fish survived this time. I know I am catching very few bass and lots of pike, primarily small, in an area that has been dominated by bass for years. If you are after bass I suggest sticking to Sullivan or putting on a wire leader because these pike are hungry.

Largemouth BassTechniqueBuzzbaitsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationOnce again I was crunched for time due to a late dinner. I kept the boat in Platte this trip. I fished in 1’ to 3’ of water and got the 4 lber in some emerging pads and dead rice. I got one other small bass. The 4 lber made the trip.

Largemouth BassTechniqueFrogs/ToadsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureMatted GrassBass are slowly coming out of the post spawn funk, which means it’s time to frog the rice, reeds, and slop in Platte Lake. Cover water and slow down when you hear or see activity.

Largemouth BassTechniqueGrass JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureReedsFishing on Platte Lake for bass this year has been slow, but the size of the fish somewhat makes up for it. This morning I got three bass. A 3lber that hit the Ozark Rig. And 2.5 and 4.80 that hit the Terminator Jig with Z-Man Hella CrawZ trailer. All fish were caught in the reeds on the Southern end of the lake in three to five feet of water.

Largemouth BassTechniqueFrogs/ToadsSeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationThey wanted the ToadZ burning across the surface this morning. I got one bass that was over 4lbs and three that were over 3lbs. They just crushed it. If you have water temp above 70, give burning a toad a try. I also got a few pike and I think missed a Bowfin

Largemouth BassTechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSummerStructureDocksDocks on Platte are back to being a thing in 2025. I struggled to get anything off of them last year. This year I’m having some success most of the time I have given them a try. As you can see from the picture it was a sunny day.

Largemouth BassTechniqueFrogs/ToadsSeasonSummerStructureReedsSpent a couple hours on the north end of Platte last night. My brother throwing Strike King Sexy Frogs and me throwing Z-Man Billy Goats. His 3lber edged out my 3lber for big bass of the night. We both caught 5 bass a piece. We both missed it couple of opportunities. Our best six went 15.25lbs

Largemouth BassTechniqueBuzzbaitsSeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationThe wind was blowing out of the SE this morning, so I thought I would give the North end that’s protected from that wind direction a try. I have mostly written off Platte this year due to a severe winter kill and have spent the vast majority of my time this year in Sullivan. I lost a two pound bass that hit my Snagproof Frog in pads, rice, and reeds. I missed a couple of other bites, but they easily could have been pike. I then moved out of the slop and caught four bass on the Greenfish Buzzbait in short order on a shallow coontail flat that is tucked in behind the reeds. I also caught a bunch of mostly small pike. I also got a nice bass in the rice and pads along the inside edge of the reeds on the Snagproof. I got my final bass of the trip along the North side of the Big Island on the buzzbait. My biggest bass was three and a half pounds. I consider getting six bass on Platte a victory at this point.
