Rainy and overcast, I expected a moving bait bite, but was unable to generate anything on spinnerbait, crank bait, or buzz bait. Got one hit on a wacky rig and caught one 3# on drop shot, both near dock pilings. Others I talked to had similar results.

Tuesday, April 12, 2022 Water temp 55 – 59 Low tide at 10:30 Launched solo at Smallwood SP around 0700. Slight drizzle expected. Headed to the Occoquan Bay. Donned rain gear. Started on the left side going in just past the first secondary point throwing 3” Largo shad swimbait on a ¼ oz ball head jig. Caught 4 LM in the 1 ½ - 2 lb range. All between the secondary to the kayak ramp. Headed back into the river. Fairly deep back there with steep cliff faced side. No bait and no hits back here. Too early. Need blade baits later in the year. Headed back to that left side and picked up another LM at the kayak ramp. The sun came out and so did the boats. Headed back across the river to the rip rap just north of the Mattawoman. No action here as the tide was just starting to head out. Went to the first cove on the north side and picked up 2 LM on a firetiger trap. These were off shore 30 – 40 yards. Headed across to the gravel bank and caught 1 LM on a C-rig with a green pumpkin lizard. Called it a day around 1pm. 8 largemouth total.

Chatterbait got the bites but when it slowed down, swim jigs and wacky rigs produced fish.

Dropshot, wacky, and freerig all produced on grass flats. Moving baits were not productive for me.

5 fish total out of the Potomac today. Bite was tough and all we caught were dinks. Wacky rigged senkos we’re the “hot bait”. Tried t-rigged senkos, chatterbait, crank baits, and spinners. All 5 were caught wacky rigged.
