What You Need to Know About Fishing Upper Red Lake

Upper Red Lake in north-central Minnesota is a large yet shallow lake with a wide number species including crappies, bluegill, whitefish, burbot, northern pike, rock bass, walleye, perch, largemouth bass, sturgeon. While we normally recommend sonar to eliminate dead water Upper Red Lake contains very little structure and bottom variation. Sand and muck make up the majority of the lake bottom and most anglers rely on a jig and minnow presentation to pick up walleyes. We recommend assorted 3/8 ounce round-head jigs in bright colors to help fish see your bait in the low clarity conditions.
