Fishing rip rap breaks near spawning flats. Targeting areas that the smallmouth would likely stage waiting to spawn. We have a full moon right now, so finding the fish was the tricky part because they were constantly moving. Once you found them you could really beat on them with a steady jerking cadence. 40-80 fish days aren’t uncommon. This day I did about 45 in 3 hours. When it was low light and cloudy I used Mat Skeleton vision 110. When the clouds went away and became bright sunny I switched between the Mavrik, and vision 110 in GG deadly black shad.

Most recent trip out on Lake Erie was beyond Tough. We took to the shallows for roamers and spawners looking for transition lines from Sand to Rock/Gravel. Upon finding these areas we started winding Feider Flys and catching most of our fish. Slightly ticking the bottom after a long cast did the trick.

This weekend was definitely interesting on Lake Erie. Found a wad of smallmouth on a rockpile in 2-5' of water that were in full blown spawn mode. Caught a few on a jig and finally a spinnerbait, which is often overlooked. Had a blast using a Strike King Burner and watching them mangle this thing was a real treat. Get out and fish!
