On Memorial Day, I used my 8’ 2B Genesis Sharp Shooter slip float rod paired with a Diawa Revros 3000C reel. That reel was loaded with 6lb Sufix Advance mono. I used a Northland Slip Float above an 1/8oz egg sinker and swivel. The business end was a 1/16oz Northland Fireball jig in Firetiger color topped with a leech. I was using my Hummingbird mega live and pitching right to them!

Found some walleyes up shallow in the morning near rocky points with sand nearby. Cast and slowly retrieve a black hair jig over the tops of the rocks.

These funky, post spawn, northern strain largemouth tend to get nomadic immediately after the spawn and chase Gills and Crappie near their spawning areas. Choosing baits that mimic these forages and covering water are the key to success on this body of water.

Found fish in 10fow with rocks and boulders. Long casts were key with a slow retrieve. The bite was decent until the wind died down.

We were finding bass in 2-4 feet of water on grassy flats. Mostly submerged vegetation with a few lily pads mixed in. A Berkley Maxscent general texas rigged weightless got the bigger fish to eat. The Keitech swimbait got more bites with a lot of 10-15” bass. The worm got bass up to 3 lbs. by using a twitch twitch pause retrieve. I heard from other anglers the same story. Lots of shallow bass but not many big ones.

The memorial weekend brought tougher than normal fishing conditions to Leech Lake. Fish were few and far between but when you found one, more were stacked in. Burning a swim jig or chatter bait in shallow reed beds around 1-2' would get bits. Additionally, if you could find any bait specifically shiners, the bigger the fish would be. Black and blue tipped with a keitech fat swing impact 3.8" in Alewife seemed to be the only color they would bite.
