Memorial day 2025. Air temp was about 50 with a bit of a cooling front. The water was colder than expected not even hitting 60 degrees. The fish were very much bottom oriented as all bites came slow dragging on bottom. There was a minor grass edge developing at about 8-10ft deep and as the sun came up they seemed to be right at the transition. No bites in the grass. Some fish especially in low light were in 4-6ft and may have been setting up for spawn as the bite was really light and finicky. Could have been blind bed fish but still had bellies on them so it is just shy of spawn or early spawn. Casting right to the bank and dragging up to that 10ft edge produced all day. Any moving bait we threw was untouched including bluegill swimbaits which I would have thought would trigger a fish or two if it was spawn and they were on bed.

bass were in pre spawn mode on the outer third of points on or near docks with access to deeper water. Most fish were in the 7-12' depth and deeper docks were more productive

Had a great day targeting shallow boulders on spawning flats using a Vision 110, caught this one and many others while casting right up against large boulders and quickly snapping it on slack line every few seconds. Using light line and keeping the drag a little loose is key to keeping fish pinned on the light wire hooks that come on the 110. The Tatula Elite is an incredible reel that casts very far with ease and having a 7.1 or higher ratio reel is key to picking up line quickly when using a jerkbait.

Fished a small lake in the Adirondacks (canoes and kayaks only) in Essex County and found post-spawn largemouth and smallmouth on rock piles, sparse grass, and laydowns. I caught fish on weightless Yum Dingers in Elder's Magic, as well as Texas-rigged Zoom Ultra-Vibe Speed Craws in green pumpkin. The Yum Dinger bites resulted in fish between 1 and 2 pounds, but the Speed Craws attracted fish up to 3.5 pounds. While a standard green pumpkin Speed Craw caught fish, bigger fish bit once I colored the craws red with a Spike-It marker. The fish simply could not resist that splash of red.

The largemouth were up very shallow, between 1-5 feet of water. I targeted docks in that depth range and I would skip my hover rig under the docks. The bass were hitting the hover rig on the fall.
