Tough bite right now but there are hogs in there. Caught this one pitching a jig at the edge of grass mats. They are where it looks like they should be.

Got back out for a couple hours to try and get back on the frog bite. The bite was slower and the quality wasn't as good this time around. Targeted cat tails with a popping frog and caught 2 bass on the only 2 blowups I got. Both bass were around 14".

Got on an early morning topwater frog bite. Fish weren't super aggressive, but I got into a few. They were most notably biting around cat tails.

There is matted grass all over the shoreline of the pond. Although all of it looked good, the key was to find the pockets with not at much THICK mats or pockets of open water in the mats. The fish were not blowing through the THICK mats. They did not like a moderate-fast retrieve either. Instead, more bites came from long pauses (3-5 seconds) after each pop/pull.

The Daiwa Emcast bait running function paid off today. I Carolina Rigged a Zoom U-Tail Tequila Sunrise swimming worm on The Lake Mary side. I dragged it along the bottom using a slow retrieve. I would reel it in for a yard and pause for a 3-5 count. On the pause, I engaged the bait running function. On one of these pauses, the line began to spool out and reel began to scream. I waited for a 5 count, cranked the bait running function to a close and achieved a solid hook set. I love these reels by Daiwa. Most brands have bait running functions in their lineups but not in the 2500-3000 range. I plan on outfitting all of my rods with these reels, matching spool size to each rod. I find them to be competent in the lure game as well as quite handy in live bait functions!

Insects
The bass on the Lake Mary side are engorged on dragonflies. Every so often, they can be pulled off of the mats by a senko rigged wacky or finesse. I haven't had any luck with Texas Rigs here as I think they sink too quickly for fish who are orienting their gaze at the surface.

On the Lake Mary side, there is a rim of milfoil. Small bass are in with the bluegills and they’re breaking the surface for dragonflies. Fly fishing May do well here and I may try that technique tomorrow morning. This 1.5 or so pound Bass grabbed my son’s Mr Twister grub…unweighted is key here. While the bluegill and perch may follow weighted presentations down, the bass are high in the water column and dive slowly to the baits presented. They prefer those dragonflies.

After a couple of weeks bluegillin with my 3 year old son, I made it out early today. Overcast conditions persist after a night of scattered thunderstorms. Water is clear but algae blooms are scattered in distribution. I worked the headwaters which are shallow and hydrilla is high enough that feeding pike can be seen with their dorsal fins out. A coaxed a couple of strikes on buzz toad and floating frog presentations. Another strike was had on a finesse rigged 6” worm. On the bluegillin side, I was able to make some observations at Lake Mary. Bass are hitting dragonflies. They are in the weed rim for cover and surfacing aggressively as dragonflies hit the water.

Fishing was tougher than expected. Caught one fish at the back of a cut on the jackhammer, but the remainder were in about 10' of water along large rock portions. Fishing the new Powerbait Football Jig w/ Maxscent Creature Trailer or the Bifflehead w/ the XZone Adrenaline Craw caught the bigger fish off of one spot. One other bite on the DT8 that popped off. Couldn't find them in the emergent vegetation and didn't have any significant bites up shallow.

Early in the day, caught two tiny smallies near docks / rock with a DT6. Threw a Dirty Jigs swim jig with a Rage Swimmer trailer around sparse submerged vegetation to get the biggest one of the day. Caught another one flipping in a mat with Zoom Mag UV Craw. Final one of the day came on a frog. Threw it over a mat on a point with waves rolling into it to fill out a limit.

Chatty still has high water levels at the south end of their lake , look for weed beds in 6-8 foot water and fish the inside just by deep water you might get a walleye or two , flipping the bushes nearby isn’t a bad idea, 1st thing in the morning use a pop in frog on 30lb Braid line.
