I was throwing the buzzbait early morning before the sun came up on riprap banks with good success. I was fishing it just fast enough so it would stay on top, but no faster. I also made sure it was a loud and squeaky buzzbait to get the fish’s attention in the dirty water after the rains we’ve had.

Fish were caught out of lake #9. I was fishing the urchin around standing timber, similar to what I’ve done on other lakes in the area, and had some good success. I switched up fishing it like a jig and jerkbait until I figured out what they wanted. I’ve found that the 19mm size catches bigger fish too. This one was 17.5” which is a bigger bass for the lakes. Pro tip: put a bobber stop on the hook after you skin hook the bait, it’ll keep it on the hook much better. Would highly recommend!

I was fishing the standing timber on the edge of the channel that I usually fish with a jig or a Neko, but tried the urchin and they loved it. Every fish I caught had inhaled the entire thing. The Randamu Lures Fuzzy Ball is the real deal and you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on it.

I fished in the wicked heat and even more wicked humidity. The fish were feeling the same way I was. Slow and tight to cover. I found them tight to docks and fairly sluggish. I threw around the buzzbait and didn’t even realize I had a bite until I felt it pulled tight. Weird day with the heat, but glad I still found some!

Summer fishing at Carter Lake has been significantly harder than the last few years due to the changes in habitat and the weather. Lily pads are sparse and fish are holding to small isolated clusters of them and weed lines close to shore. Bass are feeding on bluegill close to the bank sporadically throughout the day. Bladed jigs have been working well in open water along the weed lines and the few areas of the lake with lily pads.

The water was very dirty. No bites on green pumpkin senko. Switched to the black with blue flake and the bass began to bite. Threw the wacky rig on the edge of a moss / weed edge. On the initial drop, this 2lb 9oz bass hit.

2nd and 3rd tourneys of the year for Colorado Kayak Bassmasters. 1st day was rough - 1 smallie caught on a neko rig right up against the shore. Day two went a lot better. Most fish landed (and all the largies) were right up against stumps sitting right on shore with a lot of offshoot branches. Usually bit within a handle crank or two. Some of the smallies were sitting in about 6' of water along similar shoreline cover or on isolated weed/grass patches. Was a very aggressive bite. Fishing from 6' out to the middle of the cove caught some walleye. Also, ended up with about a 28" catfish right up against the bank along some floating wood.

I found them on laydowns. There were a ton of little bluegill up shallow so I put on a bluegill fire 6th Sense Prawn (prawn was not an option to pick for hot bait, but crube is good too). The fish are thick and healthy. I likely could’ve caught more if the wind didn’t blow out some of the other laydowns. Still a fun day!

I got out late morning and it was HOT (feels like temp of 110), humid, and calm. I knew I wasn’t going to have much luck on moving baits so I stuck a flipping rod with a Texas rig and a jig in my hand and went to work. I found the bigger/more aggressive bites on the Texas rig and jig and then picked off all the remaining fish with the Neko rig. Fun day on the water and forgot all about the heat with the fish biting!
