The 654 Challenge | JDM Edition (ft. Punch Fishing)

Published: Updated:

We recently came up with a new concept here at Omnia: What if we gave 2 anglers 6 random baits and 5 hours to fish for their top 4 fish? We wanted to find out so we sent Omnia's Chase hull and Punch Fishing out on the lake to see who would come out on top. Welcome to Omnia Fishing's 654!

(upbeat music) Omnia 6-5-4. I'm here with Brian, punch fishing from YouTube, and Chase from Omnia. We got a new concept that we're trying out. Six stands for six baits. Five stands for five hours, and four best fish. Today we're doing JDM baits. I'm going to divide them up equally among you. You have to fish with these baits or I'm beautiful like Minnetonka, moving into a early summer pattern. We've had a lot of really, really hot weather. We're starting to get this very cold windy snap coming through. So no idea what the fish are doing. - The fish are coming out. - Yeah, it's cool, it's cool. All right, so Brian and Chase, these were the six JDM baits. We're going to use different baits every single show, but these were the six JDM baits that were pulled by our team. And I have just randomly split these baits up. Some of it in Japanese might be a little bit difficult to tell exactly how they recommend rigging it, but you guys are the experts. You come up with a plan and each get two and a half hours to control the boat, decide to use the omnipop, go exactly where you want to on the lake. We'll see you get the best four fish. - All right. All right, we got my three baits here. We've got a Galapagos Acura Stick. Aaron Teal has been talking a lot about these. He's been a hot bait. They just want to turn them in for them. It's one of those heavy salted plastic baits. This will be a great bait on just a weightless Texas rig with a five out six out, extra wide gap hook, perfect for skipping docks. I've got the H-M-K-L. I'm not even going to try to pronounce that. The Paculich. Paculich. I think this will be a perfect drop shot. It looks kind of like the Striking Half Shell. And then we've got a little tiny, tiny finesse. E-B-B shot. Tiny little finesse. Looks like it's a seven gram, some quarter ounce finesse jig. Football head on that. As Matt was talking earlier, we have passed kind of that post spawn phase. The fish should be starting to kind of hit those summer patterns. We have had some cool nights. So the water is cooling off a little bit at night. So it's going to be interesting to find out. So this actually is a great mix of baits for me. I got some stuff I can work up shallow and docks. I got some stuff I can throw on a drop shot out deep. And then I got some stuff I could even maybe drag around some rocks too. So this is a great combination. So I got all ESA baits, which I'm actually pretty happy about. I've been using ESA stuff for a while, but a lot of these baits I have not used. So these are pretty much new to me. To start off, I also got the BBBB BBB shot. It's in the seven gram. So I think that's about a quarter ounce. So what I didn't notice too on this jig is it is a football jig. So like Chase mentioned, that might be a good dragger. It's not very heavy, so maybe up shallow, but this could be a fun one. Maybe like you said, skipping around docks, that kind of stuff. So I think I have a good trailer that I can use for this that I brought with me. The next one is the spatula slim worm, which I think is really cool. Couple of things I noticed is it's really thin. So if I'm in a Niko rig this thing, I might need to use like a Niko hack, 'cause I don't know if I have a band that's small enough for this, but also this is a kind of worm that you could like use with a weighted hook, like a flick shake style presentation, or also a shaky head. Remember what shaky heads are? I don't want those shaky heads anymore, but I did bring some shaky heads for this. Oh, I think a slim long worm like this gives you a lot of different options. Also, we got the AK chunk, which is just your typical chunk trailer. I got a 3.4 end of, I brought my own four inch, so I'm gonna use this as well. But I actually really want a Niko rig the four inch, maybe around grass, maybe even up around docks. You could probably skip with this too. But also the 3.4, typical jig trailer. So I might have to borrow a jig or two from Chase 'cause I did not bring one. But yeah, so obviously chunks give you a lot of options for rigging, sodas, sodas, nice slim worm. So I think I'll get a little creative today. Well, we'll see what we can come up with. (upbeat music) All right, we're here for our first spot of 6.5.4, the first round of this with Brian. To start off, I looked at the weather. We do have a little bit of wind coming in today, so I wanted to try some offshore stuff before the wind picked up. Just to see if the bass is moving out. Right up here, we got a big spawning flat where the fish have been moved up, spawning all spring. They should be pushing out. There's a nice little point that comes out here, a sunken hump out to our outside. So it's a great transition zone. We'll see if we can pick up a couple fish. (laughing) I think this is not heavy. It's a very light rig. Oh my gosh, you gotta be kidding me. You're not, what happened? Well, clearly I had a dink of my nut rod. Oh, this, when a knot was going through the guides, it got all crazy. Snap the next thing. Did you get that on film? Is that an ecstasy? Yes. Did you? (laughing) Super real. Retire. Hey, more time for me, 'cause now he's gotta get a whole new rod out of it. (laughing) All right, well now we have this rigged on an anard, you're already on. NRX 893. It's a bass, too. That doesn't count. I wasn't in the game. Would you get that one on? Isn't that go? The worm. Oh, and there goes the worm. That's awesome. Thanks, buddy. All right, well, here's a start. Start off with a stud. He left my Nico hack, but the worm went fine, so. 1.4. I'm on the board. You're not supposed to catch the first fish at my spot. Hey! You had the chance, you know. (laughing) That's not a pretty rod. Totally blew it. Let's see if any of you. (laughing) (birds chirping) It hooked up. Let's go. Little fell. Oh! Ah, he's already got me back home. Little finesse jig. All right, now let's see what mine weighs. I don't think that's gonna go too, but. Might be better than 1.4. 1.76. Monster. 1.7. All right, puts me in the lead. It does. I have a feeling blue goes into I love this little worm. Yeah, I'm getting a few of them pecking down there. Oh, yeah. Oh, drop-shot fish. A little smaller, but she counts. That one came on the leech. Puckle leech. Puckle leech on a drop-shot. Right on a lead line. Oh, it's still 1.44. Little one, but a fun one. Well, that's three right on the lead line. Whoa. Oh, walleye, whoa, speaking of walleye. Don't catch many of them out here. Puckle leech on a walleye. Stop it. Dinner. So just quick little recap. Again, I'm drop-shotting these Puckle leeches. It's a number two owner cover shot hook. And I've got it on a quarter ounce weight. I do prefer the ones where you actually tie versus the clip. I think the clip causes a little bit more line twists, but anything you can do to help at all with that. And when I get the bait on there, I've got that Texas rig down there. Get that through the weeds, really nice and clean. Right where the fish want to be. So far, just a little guys. You know, I've gotten more into it in the last couple of years, like kind of gotten back on. This is a, strolling is okay, but like, drink-be-e-fishing could be really fun. There's one. Especially if you can get like, schools fired up with the jerkbait. It's like a blast, especially with walleye schools. Love jerking walleye schools. Same feels like, kind of big. I was about to say, look at the big hitchhicks. Not coming up real quick. It's gonna be a big walleye watch. Got three walleye last time I was out here in one to eight. I don't think I caught a single walleye out here. Oh, it's not even that big of a play. Shit. I'm looking to wear a bass. Hey, you let me keep my plastic. Thank you, sir. Last week. Indie is one of those lakes that I struggle with for some reason. It looks like a fish and independence. What's that? It's got this. What's a lot of muskies in there. The bass? Ah, bass fishing, guys. No, I don't. Do you have a bass? Oh, yeah, I do. I do. Well, both flip, but she's number three. I don't think this one's gonna go two pounds either. One point, four, three. Smalls, one, so far. Woo! What are you throwing now? Still got that drop shot. Oh, I got you. Well, what GLX is it? This is the 863 drop shot rod. Oh, the longer one. Yep. Yeah, that's a new one. Love this rod. Nice. Oh, man, he's got his four. I'm gonna live it. Oh, you're shooting me. Trying to distract me here. Did it work? Nope. Not yet. Number four in the boat. They are all the exact same size. One point, four eight. What's their batting area? One point, four eight. All right, so let's see where we're at here. Six point one, two. I got some work to do. There's you like run banks and points around islands and then if, uh, it's so cool. There we go. Oh, he's on. Oh, another one and a half pounder. Oh, you blew it. Little tiny hook. It's like, if it was anybody but Ron, I'd be a little salty, but, you know. You got to give him a little. Yeah. A little leeway. Yeah, it's like our bud. There we go. Oh, this is a monster. Oh, here's a rocky. He called it. He called the rock bass. I never used to catch those out here and then all of a sudden one year. Well, we'll get the rock bass out of the way. It was inevitable. Rock bass number two. No, this will be a real bath. You can jump, not big, but not rocky. Oh, and it tossed my beach. I could just put that on. Will it beat 1.4? I don't know. Oh, we've got a call. I got two ounce call. It's sad when a one and a half pounder is calling. But it's a call. Oh, I've only got three more of these though. Oh. Oh, look how bright this one's going to call. Got a land of first. That's a good one. Kind of bad one. It's getting a little beat up from the spawn still. Looks like you're getting a little nip on the tail there. 2.09, first two pounder of the day. So we moved to our second spot now. It's the same kind of deal that we were on our first spot. You can see over there with the buoys that we've got a big, long point that comes out and a lot of fish will come up onto that point to spawn. And this point comes out under water. And so we're at the end of this point right now, right at the edge of the grass. See if these fish have kind of moved out. Just take my first cast and I got a bump down there. So there's something to live in down there. Oh. Man, the drop shot. Well, at least felt a little better. I have to get the drop shot out. I don't know what I'm going to drop shot them. Oh, I could drop shot those whales. Yeah, those worms would work. Whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops. It's trying to do something a little more creatively. Oh, little help. That one pushed me over seven pounds. Woo! Oh, I got to catch up here. 7.02. That's good. Oh, little filler. But I like, yeah. That's been the theme, but we'll upgrade. It has been the theme today. Everything is sub two. My time is shining with my finesse shaky head. And I think that brings the time of my, the trolling motor to an end for me. Oh, yeah. Oh, I don't know if that one fell a little bigger. Maybe it's a bath. Come on. Be a bath. Be a bath. Be a bath. Oh, it's a bath. Oh, that's a good one. Oh, look at that. The drop shot. Jeez. Little flipper in. That's a proper-- There's a tank of ass. On the leech again. We'll get a weight. Three on the dot, 3.02. Nice. Three pounder. I'll take it. Those are the fun ones out here. So we just pulled up to I think the fourth spot. And same kind of deal. We've got a big flat spawning area. You can see the buoy up there. And so we're just kind of on the outside of this spawning area right now on the outside of the weed edge. We moved into a different bay with a little dirtier water. So the weeds are a little bit shallower, which I think is probably going to help us out. I don't think those fish had really moved out to those really deep weeds on the clear water side. So we just pulled up to here, caught a little one, and just got to do so one. So we'll see what happens. Oh, we come out to the grass edge. Oh, guy. Look at that. I'm a drop shot still. The old dropper. I don't think that one's going to help, but we'll give it a check. We've got to be 163, 172, ounce at a time. 1.72, but it's still not nearly as clear as this. Gotcha. And again, it's still dirtier, but it's not bad. Oh, chocolate milk stuff. It's a decent one. There we go, from the back, in the back there, huh? Yeah. Oh, another three-pounder. You're smashing me. Okura stick. And now two in a quarter. Look bigger when it came in. Now the poop ate fish. The Okura. I mean, the action on these Okura sticks is just unbelievable. They go backwards, side to side. You can walk them. And after the rod, twitch half the time, it's going backwards after it. It's a really cool bait. Oh, my gosh, I'm ass. Oh, he's got one. Not bad one. Whoa. Second fish took a minute on an unnamed 380,000 jig. We don't know what this is. Wow, he is putt. There we go. Little guy on the Eastsay 4-inch chunk, the AK chunk. I got to put it together. I got to put it together. Oh, limit. Oh, one, eight. Look at that. One, eight, nine. Second fish. Monster. Look at this. Look at this baseball right here. Here, have some meat. Gotta be suck. Just Texas for you. Oh, I got one. The smallest bass I've ever caught in my life. That is crazy. And it's actually a bass. You must have dragged it through some fry. That is unbelievable. Get a little back. That's crazy. And it's actually a little one. Is he going to live? I don't know. And it's even got the spots and everything, like a big one. Hope you make it, little guy. We came, we saw you conquered. We tried. All right, we just returned back. Six, five, four. We had six baits split between the two of us. We fished for five hours. And we went for our four biggest bass. My guess four bass period. It was tough. It was tough. The mother nature has not been easy, honestly. We had a really kind of warm spell. And the last three or four days has been cold and windy and rainy. And water temps dropped at least four or five degrees on the main water. We were actually under 70 degrees coming in, which is kind of crazy. I'm thinking we're coming towards the end of June here. Yeah, it feels fallish. But we still caught a few. We caught fish. Yeah, we hit some grass lines and points. We ran about 400 docks. Yeah, we did get some bites, though. So we started out on the deeper weed edge, seeing if the fish had transitioned out. We were catching fish, but we weren't catching those bigger bites we were really hoping for. So when Brian got up on the trolling mortar, we zipped right into the docks and started pounding on those docks as much as we could. And it just did not happen. No matter what we kind of did. My main dock bait was these Okuro sticks, 3.2. And kind of a cool color, yep, Calapaco's brand. Yeah, I was pretty impressed with this bait. It had a lot of action when you didn't really have to do that much. Just a little tiny twitches of the rod would send this thing, all, I mean, even backwards, which I was, I expected the side decided to not expect it to do. Yeah, it doesn't 180. It's like a swim bait or something. Yeah, it turns really cool. Yeah, that's a cool bait. I'm going to add that in my rotation for sure. I'm excited to throw it around myself. I kind of wish I had that bait today. Yeah, no, I was kind of excited. It's a good one. I was excited to get this one, because I wanted to try it. I wasn't sure if it actually catch them, but it did. Yeah, nice case you get really weedless. So up around docks, around, you know, things you don't want to get snagged down around grass. I mean, you can just throw that out, twitch twitch, and bring it in, and hope you get bit. Yep. And then out on the weed lines, this was the kind of the player of the day for me. These pack-o-leaches, all by HMKL. These things, they look, again, just like a striking half-shot. They've got that tail flat underside. Pulling out, he smoked me with this bait all day today. This was that bottom. And you were rigging a Texas rig, which I thought was interesting, because to me, I would have been like, oh, and actually a nose hook bait, but obviously we're kind of throwing around grass, so a Texas rigging seemed to work. Yep. So you could do either way, like Brian was saying, a lot of people are going to know these, to get more action. I actually Texas rigged it on a number two drop shot hook. Get it through the grass really well. You'd be able to pull, you can throw that. It's really as thick as stuff as you want, and get it out there nice and clean. So this was a big player for me today. This caught, I think, almost 90% of the fish, for sure, my big one, so. That was a good bait. We both did not have a ton of success with the BBB jig, right? 'Cause we both had one of those. We both had a BBB jig. I caught some out deep. I did not get a bite on it up shallow at all. Yeah, so this jig, just my thoughts and opinions were quick on this jig. It's a very small jig. It has an extremely small hook shank. So if you do get bit on it, you really do got to, probably have a softer rod to set the hook on this thing, to really drive the hook in. It does have a football head, which up around ducks, I found quickly, wasn't the best duck skipping jig because I think of the head design, but it's not like a real football head. It's kind of flat on the bottom, which is kind of interesting. To me, this would be greater on hard structure like rocks. If we were in around rock piles or some rock wedges or some gravel or even sand, I think this is where this jig would really shine. To me, I really would like to throw this on like a small moth lake, around some kind of rock reefs, that kind of stuff. I think that's where this thing would excel. Today we're fishing a lot of grass and docks, where to me, this probably isn't the jig. I'm gonna, I'm gonna favor in that scenario. No, no, that would not be my number one job. We did try to make it work though. So I was throwing this, I was throwing a spatula slim all day. It's a very, very thin diameter worm. They mean this worm didn't get along so well because the way I was rigging it with the Niko, you can't really stick a really heavy nail weight in here. So we were fishing about 20, 25 foot of water. So getting this bait down deeper was a little tricky. I did throw it on a shaky head, but then I found that some of these smaller fish, like panfish, potentially even pike, were kind of nipping the tail off and pulling it off. So, I did try drop shot it for a little bit, and I didn't get bit. He was getting bit on the pack of the leech, and I was drop shot in this and not getting bit. So, you know, I tried to, I tried to join them on the drop shot kick, but didn't get any bites on that. What I, the bait I really did like, and I think I'm gonna probably be adding into my own rotation, is I really did like these, you say, AK chunks. So this is like, I don't know the name of this color, I wish I did, we could look it up on Omni as website. But it's kind of like a cinnamon color, brown, some green, a lot of blue flake in there. But these pocket chunks made for excellent trailers. I was throwing around a three-a-thounce flippin' jig around docks, skipped really good, really great action. I think because of the, it doesn't really have like, rage flange tails, but it definitely has a flange on the end, so this could be a really good swing jig trailer. I would love to throw this on a swing jig. I think up shallow, just swimming this around would be really great. But yeah, so I threw, I had the four-inch and the three-inch, so I was throwing them both on a three-a-thounce jig and skipping up docks. I did catch a decent one doing this, but I think I threw this about 400 times, and really fun bait. So I do like, I'd say the, definitely the winner's day is the AK chunk, the Galapagos, the Cruistix, and the, these pocket leeches were out. This is really good, really great bait. I'm almost more confused than what we went out, but I feel like they were kind of like, we thought they were gonna be. The water was right around that 70 degree mark. We knew that they were done spawning, but we weren't sure that they'd really made it out to that far weed edge yet. Well, yeah, you probably, right? I mean, we did find fish on those weed edges, but they were all, we went through a lot of like one and a half pounders. That's a lot smaller fish, a lot of pike. Yep, yeah, we're out, we're out around those deeper edges. But I was glad I checked the wind conditions on the app this morning. It is starting to blow a little bit now, so it was kind of nice to tuck into one of those smaller bays. Mm-hmm. The hard bottom layer on the app was a key player today. A lot of those fish we were catching on the weed lines came along hard bottom lines, hard bottom line. Yeah, we could see, I could see it on your active target too, and we'll show the hard bottom this, and the return comes back on the hard bottom, and a lot of those grad lines on the outside was like bright orange, so yeah, we were on hard bottom for sure. Yep. And you could almost kind of tell as soon as you'd move off those hard bottoms, the bites would stop. We'd have to kind of move areas, so. Yeah, a couple of those key layers definitely helped us put some of those fish in the boat today. Absolutely. Cool. Well, I'm good, thanks for having me out. This was fun. Thanks for joining us on the first one. That was a good time. I'm glad we had you out here. Yeah, yeah, we went to new baits. A lot of the stuff I'd never tried before. It's always exciting to try new baits, and I haven't excused to come out and throw some new stuff. Exactly, so I've been hooked a couple times. Excellent. Yeah, so I'm near 654. Episode one is in the plunge. So one, inaugural. Stay tuned for the next ones coming up. These should be fun.
