American Lake is a 1,000-acre, 90-foot-deep lake located within 3 miles from the Pugeot Sound in Washington State near the city of Lakewood. The Lake receives high fishing and recreation pressure as a result of its proximity to Tacoma, Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base. Although fishing from shore is available in parts of the lake boat access will allow access to the small, uninhabited islands with shorelines that provide fertile breeding grounds for a number of fish species in the lake. Species include stocked Kokanee, Largemouth bass, coastal cutthroat, rainbow trout, rock bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, and yellow perch. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife actively stock American Lake and maintain a concrete boat ramps for public use. A military base surrounds a large portion of the lake.
