Summary

What you need to know about fishing Brule Lake

Fishing the 4300-acre Brule Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe can be a rewarding experience with a large number of walleyes and aggressive smallmouth bass. The lake also contains northern pike, lake trout, and perch. The average depth of the lake is 35 feet with a max depth of 78 feet. Target walleyes and smallmouth bass in the relatively shallow depths between 8 and 15 feet near shore or windswept points of islands. You can find them in these depths in the spring and early summer where they’ve moved to spawn or set up on structure. Using a breeze to drift west to east across these points will allow you to present round-head jigs and flashy tail soft plastics. Brule is a vast lake compared to many of the boundary water lakes and can be dangerous with storms and winds expose paddlers to large waves in open areas. To minimize exposure we recommend checking out Paddle Planner for Brule Lake and all your BWCA trip planning needs to explore the location of camping sites and other area lakes to portage and explore.
