Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueSoft Body Swimbaits (Small/Medium)SeasonSummerStructureRip RapFished from shore around a couple of the cannon river bridges. Mostly rock with a few down trees nearby. Used a small 3” Swimbait and caught several smallmouth and a largemouth as well. Good places for some shallow running crankbaits as well in brown/orange craw pattern.

Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueHard Topwater (Walking)SeasonSummerStructureRip RapTargeting smallmouth bass on the river by kayak proved to be successful when using both topwater walking baits that mimic escaping baitfish as well as smaller-size inline spinners mimicking schooling baitfish. Bass tended to be found in groups where moving current met back-eddies in 2-5 feet of water as well as submerged timber and structure. The hot baits attached worked best and provided ample bites. Smallmouth of 1-3 pounds were common catches, with 4-5 pounders being possible. Large northern pike of roughly 24-30 inches were also caught; they were aggressive and chased after smallmouth that were hooked. The bite was best for smallmouth before noon, and picked up again around 4:00 pm.
