You can get away with throwing a lot of baitfish imitating lures during this period, but my favorite way to target them is to slow roll a big paddletail in a white or shad pattern. The fall smallmouth and largemouth bite is on. Casting the A-rig onto points has put numerous fish in the boat, just be ready to cover lots of water. Expect it to get even better as the temps continue to cool.

Caught this 20.5 inch 5 pounder during the 2024 NYKBF State Championships. Skipping a wacky rig under docks and one particular dock was holding A LOT of fish. Had to weed through the smaller ones to get this big ol'girl to bite. She came out and bit just before it hit the bottom. I caught a 19.75 inch Smallmouth under the same dock with the same set up the next morning!

I fished the north-end of Cayuga Lake focusing on channel swings in 6-10ft of water. The bass were located from the top of the water column to the bottom. I used a hover rig paired with a Berkley Flat Worm to target the suspend bass and I used a Berkley Hit Worm paired with half moon jig to target the bass laying on the bottom.

Located a school using our Humminbird Helix in 12-14 ft of water and set-up a slow drift. We used a simple drop shot rig (weight on the bottom with two single or treble hooks on extended loops tied in-line going up the main line, and fatheads. Pulled a 3-man limit.

Hot bite continues on Cayuga Lake for perch. Search for the schools often following the baitfish - watch for the diving gulls and use your FF to locate the schools. Simple drop shot rig with a weight at the bottom and two small treble or circle hooks stacked up the line with fathead minnows works best.
