TechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureReefSmallmouth were still around their bedding areas but were postspawn. Cruising fish could be caught on a hair jig while some still on beds wanted more vertical baits like the drop shot.

TechniqueHard Topwater (Walking)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureRock PileIt was an odd day some smallmouth were still on beds, but it was definitely a post spawn pattern. The bass were feeding on minnows and busting the surface for what’s left of the mayflies. Definitely had to wok the spook slow and they would hit it on the pause.

TechniqueTubesSeasonSummerStructureBouldersFishing a tube in the summer is a staple for Smallmouth. I like to fish it in the 5-20ft range in places that have a mix of bottom composition - a sand, rock and weed mix is best. You can drift with a tube, cast and drag or cast and aggressively hop it back (cracking a tube). Smallmouth are generally active in the summer - keep moving until you start to run into them. When you can one slow way down as there are usually more than one in an area.
