Summary

What you need to know about fishing Fort Patrick Henry Lake

Fort Patrick Henry Lake is an 872-acre lake located just outside the city of Kingsport. The Lake was formed by damming up the South Fork Holston River in 1953 to capture hydroelectric power for the surrounding areas. The easy access off of I-81 and the several boat launches at Warrior’s Path State Park make this lake accessible for anglers near and far. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are the primary game fish but there are also a number of trout and striped bass present. Striped bass get into the lake through the Boone Damn when they are younger due to stocking that takes place on the Boone Reservoir. Although there are not abundant supplies of striper, the quality of fish is superb due to the great oxygen levels and cool water. Increase your chances of catching a trophy striper by using live shad or large shiners. A great time to target largemouth bass is in the spring (March and April) when they push up into shallow water to spawn. Try throwing silver buddies, spinnerbaits and crankbaits in the early mornings or evenings. Smallmouth can be found on clay or gravel points during spring to summer. Common baits that work well are shad raps, Carolina-rigged plastics, and rebels. If you are looking to catch crappie, target laydowns with small minnows, plastic grubs, or small crankbaits.
