Working 12-15 outside weed edges, soak the bait for a few seconds before the slow retrieve parallel to the edges.

Finding good bright green climbs of coontail next to 15-20 ft of water was key. Fishing the chicken jig just off the edge produced the biggest fish. Threw a 1/2 All Terrain tackle jig closer to the coontail. And in the evening caught a bunch of smaller bass and pike with a spinnerbait up on the flats in 5-7 ft of water.

We where using St Croix panfish rods with size 10 reels by Shimano or pflueger which made for great fun when that occasional bass hit.

Flipping texas rigged plastics in thick cover is a sure fire way to snag a big largemouth this time of the season. Heavy tackle is needed to get them out of the jungle they live in. I rely on 65 pound braid and a St Croix 7-11 flippin rod to do the job.

Flipping the cabbage and coontail produced lots of numbers of fish. Spent most of our time on the main lake and healthy grass was tough to find. Fish were schooled up in the healthiest coontail or cabbage and a Texas rig or a jig produced lots of fish throughout the day. Mornings could produce a couple fish on topwater but that bite died shortly after sunrise.

Casting from shallow to deeper (12’) and retrieving just slow enough to tick the weed tops. If you think you’re going slow, go slower, just enough to feel the vibration start. Points are good starting spots but work down the main lake weed lines.
