As with any lily pad area, it serves as it's own ecosystem (shade, cover, forage, etc). This time of the year is no different, and the bass were utilizing it for such. Swimming a jig along the edges or any irregularity were producing quality fish. Remember, ALWAYS use braided line with this technique. The strikes are aggressive and often occur in or around extremely heavy cover.
