What you need to know about fishing Lake Moomaw

Lake Moomaw is a destination fishing lake located within the Appalachian Mountains between West Virginia and Virginia. Lake Moomaw was formed on the Jackson River with the Gathright Dam in the 1980s to create the 2,300-acre water body. Three campgrounds surround the 42-mile shoreline to offer top tier outdoor experience over an extended weekend. The lake offers a wide selection of target fish species due to its maximum depth of over 150 feet and cool oxygenated waters. Species include warm water fish like largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, perch, panfish, catfish, chain pickerel, crappie, and rock bass and cold water species like brook trout, rainbows and brown trout. Both largemouth and smallmouth bass thrive along the steep walls and rocky shorelines. Smallmouth prefer the in deep pools of approximately 25 feet in the summer and winter and the shallows in the spring and fall. Largemouth bass the flats in the center of the lake. Both species can also be found with a bass jig in grass beds and other weedy areas where they wait for unsuspecting baitfish. Fishing Lake Moomaw does require a Virginia fishing permit. More details about fishing the lake can be found here.
