With the recent warming trend we were targeting smallmouth bass in deeper water, looking for bait balls in around 14 FOW. We found mats of bug hatches and fished in and around them as there were baitfish packed in around these areas. Most were sparsely weeded and had no other cover. The smallmouth were definitely biting on the swimbaits and were hitting best on a slow retrieve. The average weight of the catches was around 4lbs. Catching was consistent from 14FOW to about 11FOW. Air temps started in the low 70s in early morning and upper 80s later in the day. Winds were about 3-5mph.

While fishing for smallmouth bass chasing bass in small weed patches, I was throwing the ned rig and instead of dragging it I was popping it. On the fall it got bit and thought I had hooked a smallmouth bass as it pulled and head shook very similar to a smallie. Much to my surprise it was a giant muskie and we were able to net it without hit ever breaking the Shimano 12lb fluoro line I was using. It was released unharmed and was my new PB! I’ve been targeting muskie in the past, but I have definitely caught them more NOT targeting them specifically.
