What you need to know about fishing Lake Vermilion

Lake Vermillion is the 5th largest lake by surface area in the State of Minnesota at a staggering 39,271 acres. It contains 365 islands and has a max depth of 76 feet making it perfect for breeding large Walleyes and a key fishing destination in the Midwest. The Minnesota DNR labels the eastern side of Lake Vermillion as a hotspot for catching walleyes with recent surveys demonstrating sizes ranging from 13" to 18". Many report fish bigger than this with documentation of walleyes caught in the range of 26" to 32". Common styles of fishing on Lake Vermillion include jigging, Lindy rig trolling and crankbait trolling around deep rocky humps and structure. If that doesn’t work, casting the shorelines can help you hammer monster walleye in the spring. Lake Vermillion is also prized for its great muskie fishing. Muskies in this lake tend to be on the fatter side due to Lake Vermillion’s great supply of baitfish. Even though these fish are fat, doesn’t mean that these fish aren’t long with many reporting multiple fish over 50" caught in a single day. Bucktails, Crankbaits and Topwater baits are what you’ll need to target these toothy beasts. You can find muskie around rocky outcroppings or in shallow weedy bays with some being found in open water early in the season.
