TechniqueTexas Rigs (Worming)SeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationWe were finding bass in 2-4 feet of water on grassy flats. Mostly submerged vegetation with a few lily pads mixed in. A Berkley Maxscent general texas rigged weightless got the bigger fish to eat. The Keitech swimbait got more bites with a lot of 10-15” bass. The worm got bass up to 3 lbs. by using a twitch twitch pause retrieve. I heard from other anglers the same story. Lots of shallow bass but not many big ones.

TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureReedsThe memorial weekend brought tougher than normal fishing conditions to Leech Lake. Fish were few and far between but when you found one, more were stacked in. Burning a swim jig or chatter bait in shallow reed beds around 1-2' would get bits. Additionally, if you could find any bait specifically shiners, the bigger the fish would be. Black and blue tipped with a keitech fat swing impact 3.8" in Alewife seemed to be the only color they would bite.

Largemouth Bass
TechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureMatted GrassThe bite is very tough right now with most of the fish being post spawn. I found the fish to be finicky but grouping up on their way back to the main lake after spawning. Our most productive bait was a wacky rig because it would float in front of the bass and finally tempt them into biting.

TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBaitfishFish are pushing shallow, generally in groups of 4 or more. The key I have found is to fish thoroughly, but still cover water. A light swim jig is great at picking apart almost any cover on Leech and is a great way to cover ground as well. As usual, bring your heavy gear and prepare for some fun, physical bassin!
