Smallmouth Bass
TechniqueNed RigsSeasonSpring (Spawn)StructureBouldersSmallmouth were not interested in chasing jerkbaits or fuzz. Switched to the mooch pitching to rock piles and isolated boulders triggered bites. Walleyes were also liking this combo.

TechniqueBladed JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBouldersFirst smallmouth of the year! Weighed over 6 lbs. Smallies are active in the shallows near boulders.

Largemouth Bass
TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureBaitfishFish are pushing shallow, generally in groups of 4 or more. The key I have found is to fish thoroughly, but still cover water. A light swim jig is great at picking apart almost any cover on Leech and is a great way to cover ground as well. As usual, bring your heavy gear and prepare for some fun, physical bassin!

Walleye
TechniqueBobbersSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersSlip bobbers with a leech on a plain hook worked great in low light hours. A light jig and a minnow produced during the day. We fished the main lake in 9’-14’ around structure

TechniqueSoft JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersWas initially slip bober fishing walleye off of some reefs and submerged rock islands when I I hooked into a smallmouth bass. Being that I love smallmouth fishing more than anything in the world I immediately went into search mode. Conditions were unbelieveable on Friday with not even the slightest breeze. I was able to see down into the water around 12 to 13 feet and spotted a ton of smallmouth on a particular rock pile. They were chasing heavy and hitting topwater as well but I took out my fluke because I have alot of confidence fishing with it. I ended up absolutely smashing the smallmouth for the next couple hours. One of the hottest bites I have been on in a while and they had a ton of fight. The fluke was perfect for that bite being that they were feeding heavy and chasing baitfish all over. I could work the bait fairly quickly and get a lot of fish to trigger. I’m sure you could have thrown a jerk bait as well and got just as many bites but unhooking that many smallmouth on jerkbaits is asking for a hook to the finger eventually. If they werent going after the fluke so well a jerkbaits could have been a decent alternative. Never tried anything low in the water Column or bottom presatations but those might have worked well too. Good news is leech lakes smallmouth fishery is getting better and better by the year!

Largemouth Bass
TechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureMatted GrassThe bite is very tough right now with most of the fish being post spawn. I found the fish to be finicky but grouping up on their way back to the main lake after spawning. Our most productive bait was a wacky rig because it would float in front of the bass and finally tempt them into biting.
