A lot of the bass I found were suspended 5-10' off the bottom in areas 25-30' of water. Slowing rolling an A-Rig by them was the key to getting bites.

Fish were very tight to cover in the 2-5 foot range and not willing to eat unless you hit them on the head. It was a day of the short strike. Submerged hydrilla clumps in pockets or behind islands produced the most action. Ripping a 3/8ths jackhammer through the thicker clumps or a Rapala rippin rap through the more sparse clumps drew reaction strikes. Pitching an Ike mini flip jig along isolated tree limbs or stumps also drew strikes so long as the bottom was clean with no decaying grass or slime. For FFS users there were wolf packs of bass holding under schools of bait in the creeks but triggering those fish to eat was also difficult. I had a few commit to a damiki/hover rig with a 3.5" jerk shad, but it was definitely work. I believe the baitfish were in the 2" range. A crappie jig would most likely have faired better. At the end of my 4 hour outing I had 30+ strikes but only boated 5 with the largest being 3.2lbs.
