Largemouth BassTechniqueFrogs/ToadsSeasonSummerStructureReedsI went out fishing with my brother in the evening. We both got a few one to two pound bass. He on the Sexy Frog and me on the ToadZ. My brother got big bass of the night a 4lb/19.5” bucket. All bass were caught in the reeds or reeds with pads.

I spent a good hour plus in a productive area, but the fish weren’t interested in my frogs and toads. I then spent a couple hours trying some deeper rock and didn’t get bit. I went back into the reeds and hit pay dirt with the Terminator Poppin Frog, KVD Sexy Frog, and Z-Man Billy Goat. Unfortunately, I missed some quality bites as well. I ended the trip finding a school of quality bass that had reconstituted itself on a particular rice edge that we crushed them on in July until we had fished them out and disbursed the school. They were back schooled up there today. My best six between Platte and Sullivan weighed just under 17lbs.

I got all of my bites in the final 45-minutes of daylight. I went 5/5 on landing these frog bites. Pad clumps in rice or reeds was the deal. It is a great feeling when you hit your cast in the junk and you think to yourself; if one’s there I’m getting blown up and then it happens. That happened on the first bass of the night.

Nothing bigger than 2 1/2lbs. Most of them came on the Houdini colored Z-Man Turbo FattyZ. But I did pick up more than a dozen on the 105 size Shower Blow. I also got a few on a Terminator Poppin Frog. Fun night, a bunch of bites. The only thing lacking was 3 plus pound fish, which is rare on this lake if I’m catching so many.

I tried to make a frog work, but the bass just weren’t having it this morning. I got outside of the slop and started throwing the Turbo FattyZ and quickly hooked up on back to back Platte Lake Specials. It was steady action for bass and pike for the next couple of hours on the TF. I kept trying a frog. I think the dropping water temp had them too sluggish too bite topwater this morning. I fished for over six hours and caught 15 bass and 16 pike. I wasn’t very sharp and lost probably another dozen fish. My biggest bass was over 4lbs and my biggest pike was 28”.

I started out in 4’ to 6’ in an invisible reed bed because the ice ate the reed beds this year. After half an hour fishless I moved to 2’ to 3’ range still nothing. So I went shallower and found fish along the shoreline cattails, old rice, and the only remaining reeds. A Texas rigged Z-Man Turbo FattyZ in Houdini did work. Houdini IS an amazing color on Sullivan and Platte. I finished the night running NW to the river mouth where I got the 19” on the TurboFattyZ. I also got a solid 2 liber on a Craw Tube. I got 11 bass for the trip.
