Just returned from a kayak event on Wilson Lake and finished in the top 10. The fish are shallow! Most of my bites came in less than 1 FOW which is crazy considering the summer water temps. The fish seem to be related to islated pockets/coves off the main river channel. Locating pockets with bank grass, submerged buck brush, and bait was key to locating the fish. I started the day throwing a choppo along the shoreline. I chased the shadow lines from bluff banks for as long as I could. Once the sun was high, I transitioned to swimming a thunder cricket above the submerged buck brush and tight to the bank grass. Bone color worked best for the choppo. Darker colors worked best for the thunder cricket regardless of water clarity. You will get a lot of bites in the buck brush. However, covering ground was key to locating multiple big fish throughout the day.

Largemouth bass are in the backs of most small lake coves roaming for newly hatched shad. In most cases, the are aggressively biting. I was successful throwing a 4” pit boss, most any color. Fish are 2-5 lbs with most in the 4 lb category. As the sun gets higher, bass are looking for shady spots to ambush shad.

Fishing on Lake Wilson was FANTASTIC! Largemouth and Smallmouth bass are large and plentiful (along with giant striped bass and walleye). Water temps were 68 to 75 and many bass are still on beds and spawning. I was able to catch bass on beds but also found a wicked topwater bite on the Evergreen SB! Cast your SB close to the bank or amongst laydowns and stickups and hold on. Bass were crushing the SB, both largies and smallies will slam topwater here, as well as moving bait such as swim baits and spinnerbaits. Baitfish are large and plentiful, hold onto your rod as you could easily find yourself hooked onto a double digit striper as well. For the finesse fisherman, there are tons of limestone bluff walls and rockpiles to target. A green pumpkin hula stickz on a lightweight nedrig jighead was fire on that deeper bluff bite.
