I prefer 8 lb Vicious Ultimate mono an 1/8 Venom Lures Ned Head and a Z-man Hula Stick cut down about a half inch. Target the North Shore of mud bays with some hard bottom, gravel, and pencil weeds when looking for pre-spawn, spawn, and post spawn smallies. Make sure you bring a high quality pair of polarized sunglasses, hooded sun-shirt, and hat to block out the light. Make sure to practice good Catch, Photo, and Release at this time of year. Fight the fish quickly, minimal handling, a quick photo and release.

I like a Venom Lures Donkey Snatcher Trailer (boot style) to keep the bait higher in the water column and above the mud and grass/vegetation. I like a moderate to high speed reel 7.1 - 8.1 paired with 30 lb vicious braid. If the water is ultra clear 17 lb Vicious Pro Elite Fluorocarbon.

My son calls it “Swimmin’ the Hot Snake!” . A pretty magic colour by Z-man that does a great job of imitating perch/bluegill/pumpkinseed, and crayfish all in one. Rock and boulders are key during the prespawn, Smallmouth love them year round but the heat retention and ambush points they create are magnets at this time of year. Short pitches and casts to any rock structure in May produces dozens of fish. Usually they are grouped up this time of year! Our favourite jig head is a 1/8 oz - 1/0 hook Venom Ven rig head in black or green pumpkin. 8 lb Vicious Ultimate Mono.

Not a lot of vegetation cover wise yet so rock and wood is really key at this time of year. I love the long rod 7'11 spooled with 50 lb Vicious Braid and a high speed reel to take up the slack 8.1

Its amazing how early in the season fish will eat a chatterbait! Ivr caught them as early as 48 F in the spring under the right conditions. My favourite weight is 1/2 oz but early on in the season when fishing ultra shallow overtop of last years reeds i prefer a 3/8 oz. Paired with a Venom Lures Donkey Snatcher boot tail swimbait. I run 30 lb vicious braid with a Glass Chatterbait rod from St.Croix either the Legend Glass or Mojo Bass Glass 7'2HM this is the best combo ive found with with a 7.3 or 8.1 Seviin GF Casting reel.

Casting small compact 3/8 oz venom brush bug jigs with a dream craw trailer on 30 lb vicious no fade braid. Fish moved up in the afternoon and positioned under the shade of laydowns. Bites often came as soon as the bait hit the water at the ends of the laydowns likely suspended in the wood!

Long accurate casts. Slow retrieve, long pause of 15-20 seconds in the sweet spots of rock/mud transitions. Finding the warmest water and structure in the lake. This one went a couple of crayfish claws shy of 6 lbs! A slender pointer on 10 lb Vicious Flouro was the ticket. St.Croix Avid Series 7’0 casting crankbait rod.

20-28 feet. Mid lake humps, points and deep structure. Forward Facing Sonar, fishing mostly vertical or short pitches to fish or individual boulders. In general dead stick or hover minnow a few feet above the fish. Deadly tactic for Coldwater bass in the north!
