Rockfish were going crazy last week Aug 23rd chasing baitfish around the Bay Bridge area. Lots of topwater action but we used soft swimbaits. Caught so many we lost count. Most were small but I did catch one keeper!

Fished out of Havre De Grace, MD and spent a few hours fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass in and around submerged hydrilla, milfoil, and eel grass before the oppressive heat forced us to stop. We caught several largemouth on Strike King KVD Finesse Spin Double Willow Spinnerbaits along the outside edges of submerged grass beds. Water temperatures ranged from 80 to 83 degrees, while air temperatures were close to 100.

The bay had it's normal pressure for being Labor day, but it had the additional pressue of the guys prefishing for the Bassmaster St. Croix Norther Open which starts this Thursday. Since Basmaster made the rule that in order to get an invite to the Elite series you have to fish all 9 Opens, the water was packed where I was fishing because it's where the fish usually are in this body of water this time of year. Even though I was fishing in a Kayak behind the train of boats, I managed to pull a few but it was the Yamamoto 5" black and blue weightless on a Gamakatsu Superline Spring Lock Hook that got them in the boat. Had some good blow ups on the war eagle spinner bait and the a hard missed hit on the black and blue jackhammer with chigger craw trailer. IF your fishing the flats, the Hybrid Hunter should be your bait of choice on the grass edges.

I fished the BASS Open on the Chesapeake Bay in early September and it was fishing very tough. A few keys for me were covering lots of water on the flats in practice and then slowing down in the tournament in the few areas I got bites. On day 1 of the tournament I was only able to land 4 fish but they were the right quality, weighing 13+lbs. On day 2 it got tougher and the Turbo Fattyz bite went away and I had to slow way down and finesse them up with a Big TRD in California Craw on a 1/8oz texas rig. I finished the tournament in 16/160.

Caught many quality largemouth on a Megabass Popmax over submerged hydrilla and milfoil during the early high tide. Once the tide dropped, I caught largemouth and smallmouth bass on sharp grass edges on a weightless Zoom Super Fluke in White Ice and Disco Green threaded on a Gamakatsu EWG 4/0 hook to improve castability..
