Smallmouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonFallStructureOpen Water/BasinHappened upon a huge school of what I presumed to be Cisco in a wind-blown bay we fished on Saturday. Saw the school on side-scan, stopped, put down the Lowrance Active Target2 Forward Facing Sonar and captured an amazing scene published in this video https://youtu.be/bJLoXoNNLcA. We had some of the best fishing all year. This was a feeding frenzy for predators of all species. We know because we caught individuals of almost every predator present in the lake on this spot in 30ft of water. Smallmouth and Largemouth bass, Walleye, and Northern Pike. But the fish definitely had preferences for certain types of baits and they were picky. We had to switch things up a lot and even get creative like presenting a ned rig on a Damiki rig like presentation which worked for several catches. Other times, they'd like the robo worm on a dropshot. Then they'd get sick of that, and want a little minnow plastic on a dropshot, then they'd get sick of that and want the roboworm. So on and so forth. So you have to be ready to try a lot of things and maybe even go back to the original later.

Smallmouth BassTechniqueHard Topwater (Walking)SeasonFallStructureRock PileOvercast day with a breeze. Started on deeper structure... points, humps, steep breaks and caught a pile of small fish in 18-30ft of water on ned rigs and drop shots just about anywhere I went. Found bigger fish up on top of the shallow rocks in 2-6ft on water. Lots of 2-3lb fish with some 4's mixed in. Most of the better fish hit a pencil popper. Walking it aggressively was best. Not so much speed but getting the most out of each twitch so the bait would thrash to each side triggered fish to bite. The ned rig also put some good fish in the kayak.

Later in the morning we moved to submerged timber and had some luck with texas rigged finesse worms

Smallmouth BassTechniqueNed RigsSeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationWith a 1/8oz NED head, Working the 6-10 depths where the aquatic vegetation separates the rocky flats from the drop offs. Some fish were on the shallow side, some were on the deep side. Tried cranks, CB’s, and others, they only wanted the NED worm with a dark top and light belly.
