Spotted BassTechniqueShakey HeadsSeasonFallStructurePointsFished for largemouth and spotted bass from Oct 31st to Nov 5th, 2022. Fish were scattered on and around main lake points. When they turned on, they could be caught on jerkbaits and swimbaits. When things slowed, they could be enticed to bite a shakey head worm.

Spotted BassTechniqueDamiki RigSeasonWinterStructureStumpsFished our club's final tournament of the year on Lake Gaston from Nov 3 to Nov 4, 2023. Found abundant spotted bass holding tightly to stumps in 5 to 10 feet of slightly stained water. I used a combination of drop shots, finesse shakey heads, and jig-n-pigs to catch a limit each day. My good friend and co-angler, Zack S., and I also had the good fortune of stumbling onto spotted bass chasing a large school of shad and blueback herring in a small cove. We caught fish on nearly every cast for nearly 20 minutes using keitech swimbaits and a homemade underspin jig. As he often does when fishing with me, Zack won the co-angler division of our tournament!

Largemouth BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonWinterStructureStumpsFished for fun after a club tournament on Lake Gaston and found a few largemouth bass holding tight to stumps in 10 feet of water. Where I had caught spotted bass a few days earlier, largemouth had moved in and taken over much to my delight and surprise. The largemouth willingly hit a Strike King Baby Z-Too rigged on a drop shot. Seaguar Tatsu 8lb fluorocarbon had no problem handling the fish and stumps.

Largemouth BassTechniqueLipless CrankbaitsSeasonFallStructurePointsFish were located at secondary points in the middle of creeks. Better fish were caught off the Lucky Craft LV-500 by ripping and the fish would hit it on the pause. Also used jerkbaits to locates the fish the the bass hitting that on the pause. Best bite was 6:15-11 with the bite being tough in the afternoon.

Largemouth BassTechniqueShakey HeadsSeasonFallStructureLaydownsFish were schooled up on secondary points that had a laydown on it. Had to fish slow but when one hit it there would be more right in same area to catch off the shakey head.

Spotted BassTechniqueDrop ShotSeasonWinterStructureBrush PilesHad the opportunity to practice for an hour on Lake Gaston for an upcoming tournament before braking a blade on my prop and the trim tab on my engine while on plane in 30 feet of water. But, while I was able to fish, I found decent spotted bass clinging to brush piles and stumps in 10 to 15 feet of water in the back of a main lake cove. The spots hit Strike King Baby Z-Toos in a variety of colors, which made for a lot of fun. I had hoped to find fish willing to take moving baits, but they would not. The weather was still quite warm in North Carolina - temperatures were in the low 80s, and there was no wind to speak of.
