TechniqueFootball JigsSeasonSummerStructureRock PileSpent an evening fishing this lake for the first time. Focused on points with hard, rocky bottom. Most of these areas had large schools of bluegill. No big bites, but did catch a few dragging a football jig in 15-20 feet of water.

TechniqueGrass JigsSeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationJigs fished along the weedlines in 10-12' fow were producing the most bass during a recent kayak tournament. Most milfoil has been cut, so punching options were limited, however in the remaining topped out patches of milfoil, we were able to find a few more fish.

TechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSummerStructureDocksRecently fished a tournament on this lake and it was tough. I caught a lot of fish that were not in the slot limit before deciding to fish the docks around the lake. I started noticing that the docks that were longer and narrower were holding larger fish not giants but the fish were the size I needed to fill my limit. I was able to cull a couple real small fish at the end of the day fishing a ledge with a Tokyo rig but those bites were hard to come by.

TechniqueFrogs/ToadsSeasonSummerStructureMatted GrassDropped in the lake after the heaviest rains came through. Fished through a small drizzle for the evening. Key to this lake, bluegill! They are everywhere, and the bass love them. Everything I threw today was imitating gills in some way. The terminator walking frog is a must have for any frog angler. And the bluegill color is my most successful. Threw the frog over the heavier cover and worked the edges with the choppo and a buzzbait. Flipped a few reeds while moving around also. Independence can be a tough lake to find quality bites. Lots of boat traffic but if you can get out in the right conditions and areas you will enjoy this lake!

TechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSummerStructureSubmerged VegetationHad a recent kayak tournament out there with Minnyak Kayak club. Fishing was great on independence. Water was pea soupy but cleared up later on in the day as the winds pushed all the green stuff to the north end. Dropshot caught a majority of my fish. Targeting weed edges and hard bottom transitions. Key was literally leaving the drop shot deadstick. Saw on the scope they were interested but if you jigged too hard they’ll scatter. So I knew to slow way down. Also caught a few slow dragging jigs and occasionally hopping them. A classic Texas rig also caught a few keepers targeting topped out weed clumps in 5-8fow. Have fun!

TechniqueDeep Diving Crankbaits (13'+)SeasonSummerStructureRock PileBiggest size fish came from grinding a DT10 and DT16 (Bruised) around and through rock piles. Using a Mojo glass rod helped keep them pinned. Numbers came from dragging a rugby swing head with a black and blue swimbait around rocks and pausing after deflections. Focusing on where bait was located was crucial.
