TechniqueDrop ShotSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationWarm and sunny day (~90) with heavy recreational boaters out. Vegetation (lily pads and milfoil) was thick and can range anywhere from 2' to 30' from shore depending on the lake. We probably would've done better with some frogs...but, of course; we didn't bring any this day! Wife had some luck with some wacky rigs (with a weed guard) while I found some success with dropshotting rigged weedless style. For drop shot, there were more bites on the longer 4" - 6" baits today than the standard 2" - 3.5" ones. Bluegills were bedding along shore and bass were often within the weeds and/or not far away.

TechniqueHard JerkbaitsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructurePointsCaught about 8 of them on the Rerange 110 at the very tip of a point in about 14’ that immediately dropped into deeper water. Longer pauses between rod twitches were the key. Working the jerkbait too erratically did not seem to get them to react. Slow-playing the lure got me most of my bites today.

TechniqueWacky RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationBite's been tough the last few weeks post spawn and the weeds are definitely in thick. I haven't had any success with chatterbaits, buzzbaits or jerkbaits. I was out from 10:30am-4:30pm and resorted to using a wacky rig around noon. There are a few fish shallow if you can find the pockets to cast into, but the best bite was throwing right near the weed line/drop offs at points in the 8-12ft range, especially wherever the sunfish were.

TechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationCasting into outside edge of 12’ weed line, let it sink into the weeds, then straight retrieve. When it catches on the weeds, pop it free with your rod, then continue straight retrieve. Pike love these, too, so recommend using a steal leader if you don’t want to lose your jigs.

TechniqueTexas Rigs (Pitch/Flip)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationFinding submerged grass and shade-lines was key. Fish were pushed up into the grass and all the bites came in and close to shaded grass. Flipping a creature bait like the Big Bite Craw Tube worked, senko style baits worked as well. Weight size ranged anywhere from 1/4-3/8 oz usually un-pegged. Wind seemed to kill the bite, so looking for protected areas or calm days was important. Working the bait just consisted of a couple of pops then letting the bait fall back to the bottom.
