TechniqueNed RigsSeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureBouldersWe set out over the weekend to track down some big LOTW smallies. After struggling in the morning, we found that fish were sitting on big boulders up shallow. With the sun being up high in the past couple of days, the fish are utilizing the shade of the rocks. Pitching a ned rig to these areas was the most effective technique we found.

TechniqueTrolling Deep (20'+)SeasonSpring (Post-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationWe had been trolling for about 45 minutes about to wrap up the session. Hadn't gotten a single bite at the time. Kept going for another 50 feet and got a bite. Thought it was weeds at first. There was no fight. The walleye bit and held on. Realed in the fish and thought it was a northern at first. My uncle grabbed the net and we got it in the boat. It was a 28 inch walleye. Weighing about 9lbs.

TechniqueTrolling Mid Depth (10-19')SeasonSummerStructureRip RapThe bite was slow for this time of the year. The most consistent bite found was long the shorelines, drifting/trolling in 15-30ft till you were able to dial in on what exact depth they were sitting in. The reef bite was slow, very inconsistent on if you were going to find fish willing to bite. Brighter colors were working best, chartreuse and other yellow/greens worked best along with the stable gold.

TechniqueDamiki RigSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureHumpsThe Ultimate Coldwater Smallmouth Tactic. Hanging or moping a damiki rig. This is the tactic Gussy won the classic on! Some of the keys are to present the minnow a few feet above the fish/bottom. Less is more. Perfectly still is one of the best presentations.
