What you need to know about fishing Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee “The Big O” is the largest lake in Florida with roughly 448,000 acres of surface area and 135 miles of shoreline. With a max depth of 15 feet, the majority of fishing is done toward the outer rim in shallow water. Located in the southern part of Florida, several larger cities providing access to the water include Okeechobee on the northern side and Clewiston and Belle Grade on the southern side. Because of its wide flats and expansive vegetation fields, it’s important to key in on areas that consistently hold fish. Moving from north to south, popular areas include the Kissimmee River, Kings Bar, North Shore, Uncle Joe’s Cut, and Ritta/Kreamer Islands. Water clarity is key to catching fish and paying attention to wind/vegetation will help locate the clearer water that is needed to catch giant bass. Common soft plastic baits for catching trophy bass include swimbaits, worms, and beaver style baits. Reaction baits often used consist of lipless crankbaits, walking baits, and spinnerbaits. Popular colors are June Bug, Watermelon/Red Flake, and Black/Blue. Max Depth: 15 ft, Average Depth: 8 ft
