Yellow PerchTechniqueIce Fishing SpoonsSeasonIceStructureOpen Water/BasinThe perch bite at the Missisippi backwaters has been absolutely great and will continue to get better if a person is willing to put in the work. A slow start in the morning paid off before noon. The bite was consistent with a lot of keeper perch caught. The go to lure still seems to be a Clam Pinhead Pro tipped with a minnow head. Most of these perch were caught in 16-25 feet of water. It's only going to continue to get better!

Yellow PerchTechniqueIce Fishing SpoonsSeasonIceStructureOpen Water/BasinFished pool 4 this past Sunday on the search for Jumbos. We hopped around most morning in shallow flats but could not find any of the quality sized ones there. It wasn't until we moved deeper into 20-30 feet that we started finding the Jumbos. You needed to pick through them but the quality ones were all above 12". We found that they wanted nothing to do with a waxie and jig and chose a Clam Pinhead minnow in any color it seemed. Deadsticking also produced nice fish but not as consistent as aggressive jigging.

Largemouth BassTechniqueBlade BaitsSeasonSummerStructureLaydownsThere is some great fishing to be done in this area during the summer months. You can do everything from flip wood to frog duckweed mats. Personally, I love throwing swim jigs around wood to move quickly and effectively through these narrow channels.

Largemouth BassTechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureLaydownsEarly April, main river water temps around Wabasha were in low 50s. Up to mid 50s in some backwaters. Northern Pike and Largemouth bass willing to eat Spinnerbaits, Bladed Jigs & Swim jigs around shallow cover on channel swing banks, wood was a plus. Black & blues seem to be best color, but fish were caught on Fire Craw & bluegill colors as well.

Largemouth BassTechniqueSwim JigsSeasonSpring (Pre-Spawn)StructureSubmerged VegetationThings are happening on the river. This warm spring has the fish up and ready to eat. Saw my first fish on a bed in April in 64.5 degree water. Normal spring shallow weedy flats with the swim jig was producing. Flip the Rattlin AT jig at any wood or targets you see along the way.
